These photographs were made during long stays on Hornby Island, British Columbia, Canada. The distinctive island offered both a community that fascinated me and an enchanting aesthetic experience - while creating this series featuring landscapes, still lifes and performative interactions with the environment. The personal significance of creating space ‘with your own hands’ is embodied across the range of customary and countercultural buildings shown. An odyssey of back-to-the-land reveries is documented and we see a concatenation of blossoming handmade structures. A motivation for many of the island’s residents is the choice to step back from crisis and live sustainably. I nestled into the ecology of the island and its communal utopic dreams.
