»Troubadours of Allah« by Horst Friedrichs Encounter the Troubadours of Allah in this stunning photographic exhibition that explores the traditions of Sufi musicians on their quest for truth and a spiritual union with the divine.
Exploring the Islamic mystical movement of Sufism - that encourages followers to have a direct personal experience with God through music, poetry and dance - the Spirit of Sufi Music seeks to portray this spiritual movement in an intimate and engaging light. Taken by the highly acclaimed German photojournalist Horst A. Friedrichs over a period of two years, the spectacular collection of images were shot in the Indus Valley, Sindh, - the southernmost province of Pakistan - where there are many holy shrines to Sufi saints. A resident of London for seven years, Horst commented: `I didn‚t know anything about Sufism before I embarked on the project but when I first arrived in Pakistan, I knew it would change my life. The Sufis I met and photographed were kind and wise people who strive to be closer to Allah through their poetry and music. He added: `I was amazed by their hospitality and approach to life. The experience really touched me and I hope that comes through in my pictures.‚ Originating in the Indus Valley in the 13th Century, the term Sufi is an honorary title in the Islamic world and is awarded to individuals who endeavour to achieve further spiritual development for themselves and others in promoting a message of brotherhood and unity for humankind. More than 50m people worldwide from Morocco to Malaysia now practise this tolerant and festive faith. |
