The pictures in Beetles and Butterflies are an ongoing freelance project. Made possible by digital technology, Peter Strobl started to photograph beetles he had purchased himself, but then he began collaborating with the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Each picture consists of about 16 digital photographs which are then later combined on the computer. This enormous amount of work–typically 48 hours on the computer for one picture – results in a totally focused image of the beetle. It would have been impossible with analogue technology.
